Environmental Commitment

Lumen’s vineyards are certified organic, but we take things a lot further than that. We use regenerative, no-till farming practices in order to maintain long-term soil health. We source all of our materials locally. We use lightweight bottles to reduce our carbon footprint. All winery waste (skins, seeds, stems) are returned to the vineyard and composted. And we give back to conservation organizations, which is why we are proud members of 1% For The Planet.

Wines with Exceptional Purity

The most important part of making world-class wine is to start with amazing fruit. From that point forward, the winemaker’s job is easy, and there is little to no need for intervention. Our winemaking is based on a single premise: pick the fruit at the optimal time, when sugar and acidity are in perfect balance.

Our wines are as minimal-intervention as they come. The grapes come into the winery and are fermented without adding any sulfur – or anything else for that matter. We don’t use any chemicals in our winemaking process at all – except a minimal addition of sulfites just prior to bottling to give the wine the stability it needs (maximum level 30ppm, far below organic wine standards in Europe). No mega-purple, no velcorin, nothing else added. All Lumen wines are vegan and gluten-free.

We put ingredients on our back labels, and think everyone should.

1% For The Planet

Lumen co-founder Will Henry has had a long-standing commitment to protecting the environment. In 2001 he founded Save The Waves Coalition, a non-profit that protects coastal ecosystems around the world. That organization was initially funded with a $5,000 personal check written by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard, who was a guiding force for the fledgling coalition throughout its early years.

“Yvon has been my number one inspiration in life,” says Will. “He is the most influential environmentalist of our time. Not only is he a tremendously successful businessman, he is living proof what businesses can gain from being more proactive with the natural world.”

As a member of 1% For The Planet, Lumen donates 1% of sales every year to environmental causes. Yes, that’s 1% of sales, not 1% of profit.

Business owners have a responsibility to both reduce their impact on the planet, as well as give something back to the organizations who work hard to protect it.
